Did you know all current Florence I.T. customers are entitled to a free Kill-a-watt meter? To qualify you must have used Florence I.T. services twice within the last 60 days. What can you do with a Kill a Watt? Become far more energy efficient and educated about the power usage of the devices around your home and office. Here's a few examples of what my Kill a Watt has helped me determine:
- Our home entertainment system/stereo/tv console uses almost 40 watts when "off".
- A typical office computer uses 5-10 watts when "off".
- My wife recently won one of those Keurig one cup coffee makers with the cartridges at work. I love this thing, unfortunately it uses about 1400 watts while making a cup (to be expected, typical of any coffee maker). The bad part is that it uses 5-8 watts while "off".
- Our highly energy efficient clothes washer uses about 10 watts when "off".
- For devices with varying power draws, the Kill a Watt will measure total Kilowatts, the measurement of power on you electric bill. For example a Fridge goes on and off all day long. You can keep your Fridge plugged into the Kill a Watt for 24 hours to see how many kilowatts it uses a day, thus enabling you to see the percentage of your bill that's devoted to that device, or a close approximation.

The solution to this "phantom loads" power usage problem? Switchable power strips. Limit one kill-a-Watt meter per customer.
