headerHi! This month we have a case study showcasing how we helped a software company remotely support clients across North America, a solar powered bluetooth headset, review an “frontpage like ” open source web editing application, tell you about our new website changes (Clients! I want your feedback) and showcase a small and affordable travel laptop alternative with a solid state disk (like a flash drive!). Read on:

I haven’t run a case study recently, so here’s one showcasing not only the open source (free) remote access solution WE use with clients, but it’s also something we could setup for you to use with YOUR clients. “Case” in point:

Dedication Technologies uses the Remote connection service provided by Florence IT on a daily basis to provide near instantaneous tech support to users all over North America. The system paid for itself in the first few days and my clients are constantly surprised that I can be viewing their desktop in less than 90 seconds, including the time it took to go to my website and download the small connection file.” – Will Loving, PresidentDedication Technologies provides FileMaker Pro database design services to non-profits, education and business clients. Our flagship product is StudioSchool Pro, an integrated management system designed especially to meet the database needs of community music and arts organizations. StudioSchool Pro was originally developed for the Northampton Community Music Center. Our services and specialties include: Conversion to FileMaker 9 from earlier versions, Conversion of existing data or databases to FileMaker Pro, Data analysis and database development. Our clients range from individuals to small business and schools to international NGOs.

The gadget of the month this time is the award winning, completely solar powered IQUA SUN bluetooth headset: we can sell these for $95 including shipping, though they are solar bluetoothback ordered till the 29th. Includes 2 earpieces, 12 hours of talk time and infinite standby time in sunlight. Will charge indoors and outdoors, doesn’t need direct un-obscured sunlight to charge. Iqua SUN is the first solar-powered Bluetooth headset in the world. It suports Bluetooth profiles Handsfree 1.0 and Headset 1.1, and also can pair with up to 8 devices (one at a time). This wireless headset has got a photovoltaic cell that uses any available light – outdoors and indoors – to charge itself and extend the operation times of the headset. After all, why use electricity when you have the sun?

The open source application of the month this time is Kompozer - A Web Authoring System for Linux/Mac and Windows desktop users. This program mimics Microsoft Frontpage: you edit your webpage in a program that’s VERY similar to editing in word, when done, you click publish and it’s on your website. Cake! This is the updated bug fix version of NVU which you may have heard of (but hasn’t been in active development since 05′). This easy to use app rivals programs like FrontPage and Dreamweaver – but it’s FREE. Nvu (which stands for “new view”) makes managing a web site a snap. Now anyone can create web pages and manage a website with no technical expertise or knowledge of HTML. Although it’s not currently in development anymore, Kompozer, which it’s based on, does at least have more recent activity. Speaking of web editing, the alternative that I much prefer is a CMS system (like Joomla) that we’re using. It’s so much more powerful and still easy to use. Just one reason it’s so cool is that you can pop in a template (often free, some for $30 or so) to completely change the look of your site. We recently did that and would love to here your feedback on the new Florence I.T. site layout. I was trying to simplify and streamline as I have a tendency to run on.. always a challenge when describing technical services. The first 3 people who can give me a few sentences of your feedback (which layout you liked better and why) get yourselves a free mug or mousepad from our cafepress store. The more feedback the better but 2-3 comments will suffice. You will notice with a CMS based system like ours we can specify certain items to only appear on certain pages, and to protect certain pages from showing up unless you were specifically given access to them with a login (like the videos and open source apps). These are just some of the great powerful features available with a CMS that would be extremely costly to impliment from scratch. I also am extremely appreciateive of the email cloaking feature built right in. People can send me emails from the contact form anytime they want, but they don’t get my email address unless I want them to have it. This is the MAIN reason company officials with their email addresses on your website get so much spam. The spam bots are foiled again!

cybertronWe have an exciting PC special this month, the:

Asus Eee PC Mini Notebook Computer – Intel Celeron M Processor, 802.11b/g Wireless, 512MB DDR2, 2GB SOLID STATE DISK, Intel GMA 900, 7″ WVGA LCD, Linux: $400.00 inc’s shipping to your door, with 1 yr manufacturers warranty.

It offers super low power (somewhere UNDER 22 watts). small size, and low cost! Great for easy travel access to email, among other things! Other configurations with 4gb drives are available. For more information see the product website: http://event.asus.com/eeepc/microsites/en/index.htm This runs Linux, for which there is a free remote desktop software application available, so this could be used to access your Microsoft Terminal Server if you have one (sort of as a thin client with extras). Way cool. While this laptop can edit and create word/excel compatible documents, it does not run msoffice. The 4gb hardrive model could have XP installed at extra cost. Note that if you need a standard sized hard drive and are prepared to spend, there are a few manufacturers with solid state drives out that we can sell, though they are VERY costly at this time still. They offer the huge advantage of being so low lower that battery life is dramatically increased.

Hasta Luego! Next month I’ll be talking about watching online movies on our tv and how easy it was to setup. Also since we moved a pc to the TV system I had an opportunity to buy a new AMD based system with 30% lower power consumption than the intel system I was raving about. more on that too!
