email headerHi $contact_first_name, Welcome to another Florence I.T. newsletter! The case study this time around is an antispam services solution we supplied to all of the museums at the Springfield Museums. Their existingSpringfield Museums anti-spam software solution for their mail server was expiring, so they were looking around at options. The solution we provided as a managed service required no site visit and took only an hour or so of configuration for their 100 user network. We provided this solution much cheaper and easier than a software anti-spam solution, and they also gained antivirus scanning AND backup email service from the solution as well. Note that we offer the same affordable service for small offices as well. After a month of utilizing the service I followed up up to ensure they were happy. Hearing their I.T. director say “I am so glad I called you” was a treat. It is a great feeling to work with people you can really make happy, and it made my month. So far the service has stopped tens of thousands of spam emails and a few virus’s from getting into their users’ mailboxes!

The Open Source App of the month this time is RSS Owl. More on this in a minute, but first I must mention: I really do like google reader but am disturbed about Google’s policy of retaining your search info. So here’s the catch with all of Google’s free services that everyone loves so much: once you are logged in to any of your google services, and perform a subsequent search on the search giant, your search queries are saved and associated with your account, IP address and location. At best, this highly relevant info could be used to further drown you in targeted marketing. There are MANY criticisms of the retention of search info and what it means to your privacy, and when/if/how/why that information may be revealed or reviewed by the government, or worse: stolen. It just doesn’t sit right with me, and I hope your awareness of these issues at least makes you wonder if this retention of highly personal info is appropriate. Anyhow… RSSOwl is a great RSS reader for windows/mac/linux , is free open source, andrss owl download does not collect personal information about you :) Here’s a short video I made with a basic introduction to RSS and it’s features:
http://screencast.com/t/23VsoS7O, and a little more info on a usability feature of RSSOwl: http://screencast.com/t/I5tkjRBL8
And let’s not forget you can subscribe to our wordpress blog the same way, to ensure you get our latest newsletters. The RSS link is at the bottom of the page, or for your convenience its this: http://florenceit.net/wordpress/?feed=rss2
From the authors, here’s a couple of really cool new features just added (video): http://boreal.rssowl.org/demos/m8/rssowl_m8.html

zero wattsI was very excited to read about the worlds first zero energy monitor that will be available this summer. We should be able to get them through normal distribution – so call if interested. You all know about phantom loads and how you should have your PC’s and monitors on switches to eliminate the phantom load when they’re “off”. Well this new monitor available summer 08′ from Fujitsu Siemens Computer, will not require any power switching to be truly off when turned off. FURTHERMORE, it will even detect when no power is coming from the PC and shut itself off: a true ZERO watts off. Very exciting , and as the treehugger article outlines: imagine the possibilities in other devices. This won “Innovation of the Year” at the CeBIT trade show.

acornI came across Acorn studios (click the pic) in one of my magazines.. Check out this wonderful recycled gear. Mostly women-y kinds of things, but a few office supply type items. Speaking of recycled items for women, I’m passing on that Simple Shoes is selling some handbags that my wife has called me evil for pointing out to her (ie: she loves them but they’re not cheap). Made of all sorts of recycled goodness (or badness?) such as recycled car and bike tires, hemp fabrics and more.

powerpackMy next cool gadgety thing is the Xpower Powerpack Solar:
With a 5w solar panel it also features:
  • Runs 120-volt AC or 12-volt DC products anywhere
  • Built-in 400-watt inverter
  • Two 120-volt AC outlets, one 12-volt DC socket and one USB port
  • Three-digit display for easy battery status monitoring
  • AC charger included so you can charge from a standard wall outlet
  • $162 delivered from Florence I.T. For more info click the pic.

The intresting thing about this gadget is that the specs are pretty similar to a small solar powered nightlight system I built for our house: a 10 watt panel, a charge/lighting controller, and LED lights. But my system cost far more to build than this tiny charging station which is enough to charge cell phones/pda’s, a small TV or laptop for a few hours.

Special thanks this month to the Cancer Connection for recommending us to an area author and marketing pro!

Until next time / Hasta luego mi amigos!
