emailheadSummer has definitely kicked in, and while I saw my first back to school sale ads recently, lets all remember that the summer solstice was only days ago – we have lots of summer left. Our family has been having a blast cooling off in the theater with great movies like Wall-E, and riding our bikes together a lot. It’s official though, I look like a goof in a bike helmet.
… Anyhow, this time around I have a good bit of info, as I haven’t written in a while.cc

Project spotlight: making it easier for Cancer Connection to edit their website
Over the last month we’ve been working on a new website using an open source content management system (Joomla) for Cancer Connection. The staff is enjoying a new level of ease in editing the website. They can make changes and upload files from any location without the need to install software. We donated the commercial template they chose, as we couldn’t locate a free one that fit the color scheme and layout requirements the director wanted for the organization. She wanted a positive, life affirming look and color scheme and I think she succeeded. The entire site can be administered through a web browser securely from anywhere there is internet access. Betsy is still fine tuning the site and changing fonts and adding pictures to taste, but we wanted to tell you about their new site in this month’s newsletter. Check it out at http://cancer-connection.org, thanks to Florence I.T. associate Ed Gray for his help on this site.

Schedule Emails to send L8TR
Ever wanted to send an email at a specified, scheduled time / date in the future? Of course you have. This very handy, free plugin for mozilla thunderbird enables just such a  feature, and I have been putting it to good use over the last few weeks. I find it extremely useful when I need to remind a customer to perform some action on a specific day. In the past I’d have to schedule a reminder for myself, then send the reminder email to the recipient. This way I can skip that whole step and write the actual message while I’m thinking of it, and move on to other things my brothers and sisters. ;) Download the thunderbird extension SL8TR here. Want to do this neat-o trick with MS Outlook? Your wish is my command.

datexxThe gadgety thing of the month is the Datexx Superbattery hand crank gadget charger. One of it’s advantages over similar products I’ve seen coming out is that this unit has a standard usb plug, eliminating the need for a whole bag of “accessory” plugs needed to charge various gadgets. Although it does come with 4 common cell phone tips that fit most Motorola, Samsung, LG and Nokia cell phones. Other small devices that can charge via a usb cable off your pc, like a phone, ipod or mp3 player should work fine. Pretty neat! With 2 minutes of cranking providing only 6 minutes of talk time, be prepared to do some cranking, but the devices internal battery can store up to 4 hours of cell phone talk time. Could be very handy in a  power outtage.  We don’t sell these, sorry!

Open source project of the month: Mozilla Prism
Mozilla has a very cool project you may have heard of:
Prism is an application that lets users split web applications out of their browser and run them directly on their desktop. This interface allows you to setup a certain web application (or any web page) as a separate icon/application that you can run without the extra buttons and tabs you DON’T need to run the actual application.   Read more or download here.  It can be installed as a firefox plugin or as a standalone application.

HP LJI recently picked up an excellent deal on some HP P1005 Personal laser printers. I got one for my small office (and fortunately I don’t need to print much) and love it’s small size, looks and energy star features. I should have bought more, but I do currently have one left in stock that I can offer for only $90.00, the normal SRP is $170.00! Checkout full specs on the HP store here.
acer

A nice mid/low range laptop we can offer this month is a smart looking Acer aspire that features the following specs:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 QL-60 1.9GHz – 14.1″ WXGA – 2GB DDR2 SDRAM – 120GB – DVD-Writer (DVD-RAM/±R/±RW) – Wi-Fi, Gigabit Ethernet – Windows Vista Home Premium. It features a 1 year manufacturers warranty with a manageable price of only $638.00 delivered to your door.
And finally, having a hard time getting systems with WINDOWS XP?  Not at Florence I.T.!
