Hi !header

This time: the hottest 2 cell phones compared, boosting your cell signal indoors, teleworking saves your company GREEN, and some holiday gift giving ideas.

Happy Holidays! This time I have some experience to share that only comes once every two years in this household: new phones and cell contracts! Thanks to my buddy Marc showing me his iphone I was convinced that now there is no reason NOT to have a smart phone. I spent a few weeks researching and found the best two phones that met my needs (and liked) were the new iphone 3G and the new blackberry bold. Don’t get me wrong I was wanting to get my hands on a new Blackberry Strom but no one had any. Most reviewers agree that the Bold and the iPhone are both top of the line smart phones, but for me it all came down to email and messaging. I just liked the way the blackberry sat in my hand and found it easier __by far__ to type on, so I chose the BOLD. For an early Christmas present my wife is just thrilled with the iphone 3G. To save myself some typing i’m going to link a few reviews and comparisons of both, but will followup with some personal experiences that you just don’t get to know about until you use a product. Click the pics for respective home pages.

Here’s a direct comparison article between both

Here’s a PC magazine review/comparison.

Regarding AT&T and these two phones there are some notable differences: AT&T users may be familiar with AT&T’s CV: Cellular video. This incredible service has tons of regularly updated video content: FOX,ABC,NBC,CBS and CNN news videos among many others, updated throughout the day. Unfortunately this excellent service is not available on the iphone data plan. However a slight alternative is the free application on iapps that I setup for my wife: joost. The joost only works on the wifi connection, while my CV only works on cellular. She was able to find and play complete movies! Now if that’s what I was looking for the iphone would be mine ;) The iphone dataplan includes GPS, while the blackberry plan doesn’t. the blackberry does include a GPS enabled yellowpages app which is really great for me. Both phones offer wifi and highspeed 3G support, GPS features, nice screens and the ability to make calls and use the internet at the same time. Both have good speakerphones. The Bold has a faster processor and a higher resolution screen though for web browsing I’d still go with the iphone as it’s larger and still a very nice screen.

Boost your indoor Cell Signal.

To get the iphone we chose to switch carriers to AT&T which offered a slightly less robust signal at our house, which led to more reseacrh on cell phone cignal boosters. I installed a zboost unit which I almost would say requires a pro to install. Needless to say as I small bus. owner I’m used to doing _everything_ myself, so I spent a whole day positioning the antenna outside, testing, repositioning, testing, etc.. Anyhow we’re now setup and with one bar of signal in the house without this device, turning it on gets us 3 to 4 bars. You can get these from Florence I.T. for $320. This is the dualband unit that will work with pretty much any carrier, except Nextel as I recall.

NOTE: this device can only take the signal you have outside and bring it indoors: if you have 1 bar outside on your roof it will only be one bar inside. These devices really work, and well , if you know what to expect and are prepared for the installation which may NOT always be easy. For more information read this detailed review.

Save some GREEN, work at home

By now you’ve heard of the wonders of the remote workforce, and how that can save time and money while offering environmental and employee morale benefits. I recently read some impressive statistics on how SUN has benefitted from their telecommuting program. Sun has more than half their 20,000 employees work from home at least 1-2 days per week. In 2007 alone they were able to reduce their real estate holdings by about 15%, they have 30% lower costs for employees who work at home a couple days per week, and 70% annual lower costs for home based workers.

Improve morale, employee retention and motivation.

For employees themselves they love it, and SUN estimates a yearly savings of $1700.00 per employee in reduced fuel and vehicle wear, and a gain in 2.5 weeks of work time by eliminating daily commutes. On the environmental front SUN estimates a reduction in CO2 by about 31,000 tons, and estimates that for each employee who works at home 2.3 days per week saves 5,400 kilowatt watt hours annually.

These kind of benefit percentages are not to be enjoyed by large corporations alone, as I can personally attest to the savings of performaing about half of my work remotely as well, and service some clients who are many hours away.
