Hi !

header

I Almost missed getting a newsleter out this month, it’s been a very hectic pace lately, and I’m starting to catch up finally so was able to get this out to you. Our year end donations came out at 15.1% of our pretax profit, all donated to local charities. I thought the number would be higher but some year end expenses brought it down. Though this is still a good percentage, it’s not as much as I’d like to see it this year, work with me people ;)

  • This issue: The benefits of an SSL VPN, another unique option for protecting your wifi network security, we’re now an F-Secure partner, cool kill-a-watt mod that twitters, a couple links for green products and paper, the open source application of the month, and some info on how you can test if your ISP is blocking some of the traffic you pay for.

Why Switch from IPSec to an SSL VPN?

Remote access is becoming critical to organizations as network boundaries disappear and the workforce becomes more mobile and distributed. Today’s highly mobile teleworkers demand more secure access to more resources from more remote unmanaged devices and platforms than every before. Increasingly, organizations are discovering that their IPSec VPN solution is not meeting their remote access needs. As a result, organizations are investing in SSL VPN technology – a more flexible solution that features granular clientless access control and greater security for mobile devices. The result?  A more secure and productive workforce. But is this the right choice for you? The SonicWALL “Why Switch from IPSec to SSL VPN” eBook can help you evaluate your remote access needs and help you through a decision. Download this eBook to learn:

  • Why IPSec VPNs are not sufficient for supporting the modern mobile workforce
  • How SSL VPNs support disaster recovery, wireless access, Network Access Control (NAC) and Green IT.
  • IPSec VPN Security concerns and cost inefficiencies.
  • Best practices for making the transition to SSL VPN technology.
  • Real world lessons in making the transition.

“New paint promises high-speed Wi-Fi shielding”

Japanese researchers have come up with a paint that they say will block high-speed wireless signals, giving businesses a cheap option to protect their wireless networks.Click the link above for more info.

fsecureWe recenty did some scouring online to find the opinions of other IT pros on the best security software to deploy on a windows terminal server we were planning to install. One company came up alot: F-Secure. We obtained a trial copy and were sold. Server specific or workstation deals  are similarly priced to other offerings ($70 covers 3 pc’s with their total internet security suite). Performance, cost and quality all top notch. Just what we’re looking for in the solutions we provide. For the workstations, the security suite offers a virtually silent firewall/antivirus/antispam and antispyware. I’m using it here and at half a dozen clients and everyone is pleased.  It’s in most top 10 lists, and here’s an independdent unboased review of the latest security suite: here.

Into twittering? Into saving power? I thought this was the coolest thing I’ve seen in quite a while:kill-a-watt tweeted.

Looking for bags, bottles and other earth friendly items? The Niokagreenstore.com is one place to find some things like biodegradeable bags , water bottles free of BPA, and other neat stuff.

Don’t forget one of your sources for recycled office paper supplies is greenline paper company. Where do you get your local recycled papers? Please write and let me know!

We haven’t had an “open source application of the month” for a while, as I have covered most of the consumer oriented programs available in the last 4 years I’ve done this newsletter (email me ideas if you know of something please!). However, the new OpenOffice 3.0 is out and if you are a 2.0 user I HIGHLY suggest upgrading. 3.0 is far faster with a host of new features.  Openoffice.org.If you didn’t know, we keep a list of all the great open source (free) applications we’ve reviewed over the years here on our website: http://florenceit.net/articles/21-open-source-apps. You must create an account and login to see the list. The login information is only to password protect the info, theres no private info (like your email) required from you when registering.

Interesting and useful couple of applications: you can find out if your ISP is throttling your internet traffic, or otherwise blocking or limiting any of the service YOU PAY FOR. Link here.

Hasta Luego !
