Hi !

header

I am so so confident we are in the home stretch for spring. Fingers crossed!

This month it’s kind of short. We have gathered some links and info for you covering: inspirational and educational TED videos, whole house energy monitoringing, and a couple PC deals.

A few months back I came across TED in a business magazine. It was recommended as a source of inspirational speeches and I have to say I’ve been finding it to be so, without a doubt. The conference has a GREAT website with video archioves of a ton of inspirational speaches from some of the smartest minds around.TED Sylvia Earle won this years prize, and if her talk interests you I encourage you to check out the talk by Charles Moore. I wouldn’t really call these 2 speeches inspiring but they are certainly motivating, I hope you find them so.

For something of another nature, I enjoyed Elizabeth Gilbert’s talk on nurturing creativity. Click the names to view the speeches.

The green gadgety thing this month

Since I’m a Terrapass member I came across the Home Energy PowerCost Monitor, that boasts it can save you 20% in energy costs. As a long time Kill-a-Watt user who’s found and eradicated numerous phantom loads in our house, I can easily believe this claim. The good news is you can buy this trhough a local organization, AND benefit a local nonprofit: First start out at CET’s storefront entrance. Don’t forget to note that coupon code, then login and look for energy meters and you’ll find the Blue Line Home Energy Monitor. Interestingly there is also a black and decker unit that appears to be the exact same thing for $10 less. savings energy is all about education, and these types of device do teach. Getting one of these whole house monitors is tops on my list as it’s my hope that the realtime usage and cost information displayed will be of more interest and relevance to the other family members around here ;)

What I like even better is the TED Model 1001 (no relation to the TED conference above, wierd coincidence) device I just came across. It’s basically the same thing but offers PC data logging. This unit is a bit more expensive but does offer the software and data logging.  Other than data logging, the other difference between the 2 units is that TED does not use batteries (they say TED only costs about $0.08 per month to operate), whereas the Blue Line/B&D units are wireless and use batteries. The blue line unit requires hanging a device off your electricity meter outside, the TED device hooks up inside to your electric panel. I’m waiting for my TED to come in right now :) . For a nice video review of the TED checkout this.
