headerHello and welcome again! So I’ve finally started twittering, it’s quite fun, not to mention a completely innovative way to stay in touch with friends and colleagues. I invite you to follow me, and I am always interested in turn to follow my friends and customers as well, so lets get tweetin.

Not being much of a TV watcher (but a big movie fan), I found myself in front of the TV Tuesday March 24th and watched a very disturbing edition of Nova, followed by a very disturbing edition of Frontline, both on PBS. It was a night of bar charts with huge exceptions from the norm (carbon and the deficit).  I encourage you to check out the NOVA website for  Extreme Ice. The whole show should be available by the time you read this for free viewing online. If you need copies for educational purposes of any kind I will donate up to 4 DVD purchases from WGBY for your nonprofit or educational organization (1 PER ORIGANIZATION PLEASE).

If you ever wanted to text someone without those pesky charges, you can find out the carrier email to text number and email your text message. A pretty complete list is here.  I find it extremely annoying that carriers charge so much for texting, when it costs so very little to transmit a few bytes of text. My particular carrier (AT&T) does not include texting in the “unlimited” data plan. I absolutely refuse to pay for a text plan out of principal. I am not alone an i think we an expect to see changes in how this is billed in the future.

solarLast week I had my buddy George here, and he designed and built a nice mount for my FOURTH 175w solar panel (pictured here). We now have 700w DC of offgrid solar (that runs the Florence I.T. website 24/7/365, and my home office seasonally).  I’m excited about the extra capacity and hope to run a small window AC unit on it this summer. Every bit of off grid power used is that much less coal and natural gas that needs to be burned.

In related news, I have read some very promising news about updated battery technology from Axion. Sealed lead acid batteries (those used in cars, renewable energy systems, electric and hybrid cars), have been pretty much the same for ages (invented in 1859). Axions testing uses carbon for one of the plates insteadof lead, making for a lighter battery and one that (in tests) withstood 1600 deep charges before failure (about 3 times better than standard lead acid batteries)! What the world needs is much better electricity storage technologies , so I consider this a field worth watching closely.

In the meantime I’ll be looking to expand my battery system for the solar later this year, and I wonder if I’ll be buying them just before the next big invention. In a way I hope so.

joomlaIf you have or are considering a Joomla website you may be interested in Joomla Day. Check it out, held locally at Marlboro College on May 30, and only $45 for the day: Joomla! Day New England.

gpl2The open source application of the month (that hasn;t quite been monthly I admit) this time is PDFSam. This useful utility allows you to split and merge PDF documents in pretty much any manner you choose. There are binaries and executables for Linux and Windows. The advanced version is available for a donation of 1 euro and offers, you guessed it, advanced features. PLease see their website for more info.Well, somehow… I managed to get  a newsletter out this month, JUST barely. I hope you’ve found some useful items in this issue! Next month, or maybe in an extra newsletter in April, I plan to talk about server virtualization a bit (don’t worry, it’s easier to understand than you may think, and can save you some $).  Until then, I guess it’s time to till the garden…

thank you,

oh, and hope you had a good earth hour this weekend!
